My dishwasher is leaking onto the floor

A puddle in front of the dishwasher usually shows up right after a cycle. It's worth sorting out soon, because water that gets under the floor or into the cabinet keeps doing damage after it's out of sight. Most leaks come from a short list of places.

What you can safely check first

A couple of quick checks tell you whether it's the plumbing connections or the machine.

  1. Wipe the floor dry and put a dry towel along the front of the dishwasher.
  2. Look under the kitchen sink while the dishwasher fills and drains. Drips there point to the supply line or the drain hose.
  3. If the water only appears at the door during a cycle, the door seal is the likely cause.

What might be behind it

More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.

The water supply connection. The line that feeds the dishwasher, and the fitting where it connects, can loosen or wear and drip under the machine.

The drain hose. The hose that carries water to the sink drain or disposal can crack, slip off, or leak at its clamp.

The shutoff under the sink. An old shutoff valve feeding the dishwasher can weep at the stem, and the water runs down behind the machine.

The door seal or the machine itself. A worn door gasket or an internal part of the dishwasher is an appliance repair rather than plumbing.

How we fix it

We check the supply connection, the drain hose and the shutoff that serve the dishwasher, find which one is leaking, and repair or replace that connection. We test it with a full fill and drain before we leave.

Depending on the cause, the relevant services are appliance hookups or valves, supply lines and small repairs.
