Price expectations

What drives the cost

The price depends on what the plumber finds. Here's what each outcome looks like and where it starts. You don't pick one: book the visit, and we confirm the scope and price with you before any work starts.

Best case

Ask us

A tankless unit losing efficiency, descaled.

  • Descale your tankless unit to restore efficiency and lifespan.

Exceptional

Ask us

A new tankless installation where there wasn't one.

  • Install a quality tankless unit with full venting, gas and water hookup.

What can change the price

  • Upfront cost versus long-term. Tankless costs more to install than a tank, but it doesn't run out of hot water and doesn't keep a full tank hot all day.
  • Maintenance. With hard water, tankless needs a regular flush to keep working well. Skipping it is the most common reason units fail early.
  • Fit for the house. Switching from a tank sometimes needs a bigger gas line or new venting. We'll tell you if that makes tankless a poor fit for your home.

You don't need to pick one.

Tell us what's happening. You can leave the diagnosis to us; the visit is where we work out which fix you need.

Is this what you’re dealing with?

Tankless heaters are great until one throws an error code and the hot water stops. The fix is often simpler than it looks. And if you're thinking about going tankless, it's a good upgrade in the right house, but not in every house.

Check it yourself first

A few tankless problems are yours to try first. Your owner's manual is a good guide.

  1. Note the error code on the display and look it up in the owner's manual. Many codes are simple.
  2. Turn the unit's power off and back on once to reset it.

Questions people ask

What usually causes it?

Scale buildup inside the unit: Minerals in the water coat the heat exchanger. That's the most common reason a tankless heater loses performance or shows an error, and a flush often fixes it. A clogged inlet filter: The small filter where cold water enters can clog and cut the flow until the unit won't fire. A gas, venting, or power issue: Tankless units need enough gas, clear venting, and power. A problem with any of them shows up as an error code or no hot water. The unit is failing, or it's time to upgrade: An older unit with repeat failures, or a tank you want to replace with tankless.

How do you price it?

Repairing or descaling an existing unit, replacing one, and converting from a tank are different jobs. We check the unit, flow requirements and connections so the proposed work fits the house.

Can I check it myself first?

A few tankless problems are yours to try first. Your owner's manual is a good guide.

What happens when you come out?

The error code history and what it points to. The inlet filter, water flow, and scale in the heat exchanger. The gas supply, venting, and power to the unit. For a new install, whether the gas line and venting can support tankless.
