My refrigerator's water line is leaking or not working

The thin water line behind a refrigerator is easy to forget until the ice stops or a damp spot appears on the floor. Because it's tucked behind a heavy appliance, a slow leak can go unnoticed for a while, so it's worth a look as soon as you suspect it.

What you can safely check first

You can usually tell where the problem is without moving anything heavy.

  1. Look and feel along the floor at the sides of the refrigerator for dampness.
  2. If the ice maker stopped but there's no leak, check the refrigerator's manual for a water filter that may need replacing.
  3. If you see water, don't pull the refrigerator out by yourself. A kinked line can break when the appliance moves.

What might be behind it

More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.

A kinked or cracked line. Pushing the refrigerator back can kink the line, and older plastic tubing gets brittle and cracks.

A loose fitting. The connections at the wall valve or at the back of the refrigerator can loosen and drip.

A worn supply valve. The small valve that feeds the line can stick partly closed or weep at the stem.

A part inside the refrigerator. A frozen line or a failed valve inside the refrigerator is an appliance repair.

How we fix it

We check the line, its fittings and the supply valve, then replace damaged tubing with a line and fittings suited to the appliance. We test for leaks with water flowing before the refrigerator goes back in place.

Depending on the cause, the relevant services are appliance hookups or valves, supply lines and small repairs.
