When it becomes urgent
If the shower won't shut off at all, close the house's main water shutoff until it's repaired.
What you can safely check first
Don't force a stiff handle. That can break the valve inside the wall.
- Note whether the handle is stiff, loose, or turns but doesn't stop the water.
- If the shower won't shut off, close the house's main water shutoff.
What might be behind it
More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.
Scale on the cartridge. Mineral buildup makes the cartridge stiff and stops it closing fully.
A worn cartridge or stem. Worn parts inside the valve let water keep flowing after the handle is off.
A loose or stripped handle. The handle itself can strip so it turns without moving the valve.
How we fix it
We check the handle and the valve behind it, then repair or replace the worn part. We assess which part needs attention before opening the wall.
Depending on the cause, the relevant services are shower valve repair and replacement.
