My shower temperature keeps changing

Few things are more annoying than a shower that turns cold, or suddenly hot, in the middle of rinsing off. It's usually the valve inside the wall that mixes hot and cold, and it's a repair we can often make without major wall work.

What you can safely check first

A quick test helps us tell whether it's the shower valve or the water heater.

  1. Run hot water at a sink at the same time and see whether it also runs out quickly.
  2. Notice whether the change happens when someone flushes a toilet or runs water elsewhere.

What might be behind it

More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.

A worn cartridge or mixing valve. The part that balances hot and cold wears or clogs with scale, so the temperature drifts.

A valve that doesn't balance pressure. Older valves can't adjust when someone uses water elsewhere in the house.

Not enough hot water. If the water turns cold after a few minutes everywhere in the house, the water heater may be the cause.

How we fix it

We check the shower valve and the hot water supply to find which one is causing the change. We assess which part needs attention before opening the wall, and explain the repair first.

Depending on the cause, the relevant services are shower valve repair and replacement or water heater repair.
