When it becomes urgent
If the smell is strong or doesn't go away, leave the house now. Don't switch lights or appliances on or off, and don't light anything. Call from outside.
What you can safely check first
Gas isn't something to fix yourself, and it isn't something to go looking for. A brief whiff when a stove burner lights is normal. A smell that stays is not, and this is all you should do.
- Get everyone out of the house, including pets. Leave the door open behind you.
- Don't flip switches, unplug anything, use the garage door, or light anything on the way out.
- From outside, and away from the house, call your gas company's emergency line or 911.
- Once they've made it safe, call us to repair the line.
What might be behind it
More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.
A leaking fitting or connector. Joints and the flexible connectors behind gas appliances wear out or loosen over time. That's the most common source of a gas leak.
A damaged or corroded line. A section of gas pipe damaged by corrosion, construction, or ground movement.
How we fix it
After the gas utility or emergency responders have made the situation safe, we inspect the affected plumbing and explain any gas line repair needed. A damaged fitting and a corroded section have different scopes. The repaired line is tested before returning to use.
Depending on the cause, the relevant services are gas line repair.
