When it becomes urgent
If water is pooling, turn off the valve behind the toilet and stop flushing it. Water at the base can soak into the floor.
What you can safely check first
Find out where the water comes from first.
- Dry everything, then watch the supply line, the tank bolts and the base while you flush.
- If it only leaks when you flush, it's likely the seal at the floor.
- Turn off the valve behind the toilet if you can't stop the water.
What might be behind it
More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.
A failed wax ring or seal. The seal between the toilet and the drain can fail, so water escapes when you flush.
A loose supply line or tank bolt. A drip from the supply line or the tank can run down and look like a leak at the base.
A cracked toilet or damaged flange. A crack in the porcelain or a broken flange usually means replacing the toilet or the flange.
How we fix it
We trace the water to the tank, supply connection or seal underneath and check whether the toilet is secure. A new seal may solve a base leak; a damaged flange or cracked toilet changes the work. Replacement is discussed only when the condition calls for it.
Depending on the cause, the relevant services are toilet repair or toilet replacement.
