My faucet keeps dripping

A faucet that drips all night is annoying, and you can almost hear the water bill going up. It's one of the most common repairs, and it's usually a worn part inside the faucet rather than the whole thing.

What you can safely check first

A couple of checks tell you what you're dealing with.

  1. Turn the handle firmly off. If it stops, the shutoff parts are wearing.
  2. Check whether it's the hot side, the cold side, or both.
  3. If it drips heavily, turn off the valves under the sink until it's fixed.

What might be behind it

More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.

A worn washer, seal or cartridge. The parts that shut the water off wear with use, and then let a little water past.

An old or damaged faucet. When the body is corroded or parts aren't available, replacing the faucet makes more sense than repairing it.

How we fix it

We identify the faucet and check the worn seal or cartridge. If the body and connections are sound, replacing the failed part may be enough. We explain replacement only when damage, condition or parts availability makes repair a poor fit.

Depending on the cause, the relevant services are faucet repair or faucet replacement.
