What you can safely check first
With the power off, a couple of checks are safe to try.
- Turn the switch off, and unplug the disposal or turn off its breaker, before checking anything.
- Never put your hand inside the disposal.
- Press the reset button on the bottom of the unit, then try it again.
What might be behind it
More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.
Something jammed inside. A hard object can stop the plate from turning, so the motor hums without spinning.
A worn-out unit. Disposals wear out, and a leaking or failing unit is usually replaced rather than repaired.
How we fix it
We assess whether the disposal is jammed, has a connection problem or has failed. Humming alone does not mean it needs replacing. If replacement is appropriate, we explain the unit choice and check the drain connections as part of the installation.
Depending on the cause, the relevant services are garbage disposal replacement.
