When it becomes urgent
If water is pouring out and won't stop, close the main water shutoff to the house until it's repaired.
What you can safely check first
A quick check helps you tell us what you're seeing.
- Unscrew the hose and see whether the drip continues with nothing attached.
- Turn the handle gently to closed. If it spins without stopping, the stem is stripped.
- If it won't stop and the water is pouring, close the house's main water shutoff.
What might be behind it
More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.
A worn washer or cartridge. The part that seals the faucet when it's closed wears out, so it keeps dripping.
A stripped handle or stem. The handle turns but no longer closes the valve inside.
A cracked faucet body. Freeze damage or age can crack the faucet itself.
How we fix it
We check whether the faucet can be repaired or should be replaced, then make the repair and test it with the water on. We also check the connection and nearby pipe for leaks.
Depending on the cause, the relevant services are hose bibs and outdoor faucets.
