Drains & Sewer · Conroe, Texas

My drain is gurgling

A gurgle from the tub when you flush, or a bubbling sink after the washer runs, is the kind of sound that makes you wonder what's going on in the walls. It's a common sound, and it's useful: it means air is being pushed or pulled through a drain where it shouldn't be, and that tells us where to look.

What you can safely check first

A gurgle alone isn't an emergency. Two quick checks tell you whether it's one drain you can clear or something to have looked at.

  1. Notice when it happens. If one sink gurgles when it drains and nothing else does, try clearing that drain's stopper and plunging it.
  2. Check whether other drains are slow. One slow, gurgling drain is usually a local clog.

What might be behind it

More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.

A partial clog in the drain line. Water squeezing past a buildup pulls air through the trap and makes it gurgle. The drain is often a little slow too.

A blockage in the main line. If a toilet or tub gurgles when a different fixture drains, the problem may be in the line they share, further from the fixtures.

A blocked or missing vent. Drains need a vent to the roof to flow smoothly. When it's blocked, the drain pulls air through the nearest trap instead.

How we fix it

We check how the fixtures drain together and whether the sound points to a restriction or a vent problem. Cleaning can help a blockage; damaged pipe or a vent issue needs a different repair. The sound alone does not tell us which one.

Depending on the cause, the relevant services are drain cleaning or sewer line repair.
