What you can safely check first
One simple check tells you whether it's air.
- Fill a clear glass with cold water and set it on the counter.
- If it clears from the bottom up within a minute or two, it's air, and usually nothing to worry about.
- If particles settle at the bottom or it stays cloudy, note whether it's hot water, cold water or both, and let us know.
What might be behind it
More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.
Air in the water. Tiny air bubbles make water look milky and clear from the bottom up within a minute.
Sediment from the supply or pipes. Sand, scale or rust particles can come from the water supply or from inside older pipes.
Something to identify in the water. When the cause isn't obvious, a test tells you what's there.
How we fix it
We check hot and cold water at a few fixtures, look for the source, and use a water test when the cause isn't clear. If sediment is coming in with the supply, we explain filtration options based on what the test shows.
Depending on the cause, the relevant services are whole-home water filtration or water quality test.
