Water Quality · Conroe, Texas

My water leaves white spots and crusty buildup

White spots on glasses, a crusty ring around the faucet, a showerhead that sputters: it's frustrating to clean the same thing every week. It's usually hard water, and it's something you can measure before you decide what to do about it.

What you can safely check first

You can see how much it affects you before you call anyone.

  1. Soak a showerhead or faucet aerator in white vinegar overnight and see how much scale comes off.
  2. Note where it shows up: just the hot side, or everywhere water dries.
  3. Check your water utility's annual water quality report for its hardness reading.

What might be behind it

More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.

Hard water. Water carrying a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium leaves them behind as scale wherever it dries or heats up.

Scale in the water heater. Hard water builds up inside a water heater too, which can make it noisy and less efficient.

How we fix it

We test the water before recommending treatment. A softener addresses hardness minerals; sediment in a heater may need separate maintenance. We use the results and household demand to explain suitable options instead of assuming every buildup needs the same system.

Depending on the cause, the relevant services are water quality test, water softener installation or water heater flush and tune-up.
