My outdoor faucet froze or split

Texas freezes don't come often, which is why they catch outdoor faucets by surprise. A faucet that froze can look fine until you turn it on and water shows up where it shouldn't, sometimes inside the wall behind it.

When it becomes urgent

If water is spraying or running into the wall, close the house's main water shutoff until it's repaired.

What you can safely check first

Before you call, two checks help us know what to bring.

  1. Turn the faucet on briefly and look for water leaking at the faucet or along the wall outside.
  2. Check the inside of that wall, or the room behind it, for dampness.
  3. If you find water, turn the faucet off and close the house's main water shutoff if it keeps leaking.

What might be behind it

More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.

A cracked faucet. Water left inside the faucet froze and split it.

A split pipe behind the faucet. The pipe feeding the faucet can split inside the wall, so water leaks indoors when the faucet is on.

A hose left connected. A hose left on in a freeze traps water in the faucet and makes splitting more likely.

How we fix it

We find whether the faucet, the pipe behind it, or both were damaged, then replace the faucet and repair the pipe as needed. We test the repair and check for any leak inside the wall.

Depending on the cause, the relevant services are hose bibs and outdoor faucets or leak detection.
