What you can safely check first
A few checks tell you whether it's plumbing at all, before anyone looks under the floor.
- Rule out the simple things. Sun through a window, an air duct, or an appliance on the other side of the wall can warm a floor.
- Turn off every faucet and water appliance, then check the water meter. If the leak dial keeps moving, water is going somewhere.
- Listen at the water heater with no hot water running. If it keeps firing or you hear water moving, hot water may be leaking out.
- Walk the floor barefoot and note where it's warmest and how far the warmth spreads. Tell us when you call. It's where we start looking.
What might be behind it
More than one thing can cause this, which is why the plumber finds the cause first.
A hot water line leaking under the slab. Hot water leaking under the foundation warms the floor above it. The water heater often runs more than usual, and the bill goes up.
A hot water line leaking in a wall or floor. A leak in a line close to the floor, near a bathroom or kitchen, can warm the floor nearby before any water shows.
How we fix it
We investigate the hot-water supply and locate the source before discussing access. A warm floor can be a clue, but it does not establish the repair by itself. If we find a leak, we explain where it is and the options for reaching and repairing it.
Depending on the cause, the relevant services are leak detection.
